The Legal Metrology Un it has its Headquarters at Gangtok for North-East Circle and branch office at Jorethang for South-West Circle. The Units realise their revenue by way of verification and stamping of commercial weights and measures, weighing and measuring instruments and also by compounding fines. The Unit(s) realize 100% of the revenue fixed by the Government every year.
The Legal Metrology Unit has a mini laboratory where weighing and measuring instruments of prescribed accuracy and other ancillary tools are installed. These equipments are utilized for authentication of accuracy of weights and measures, weighing and measuring instruments as per the standard prescribed under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (1of 2010).
In view of globalization of economics and technological growth in industrialization, there has been vast advancement in weighing and measuring techniques. In order to cope with these growing standards, the Government of India has granted a sum of Rs 1.95 crore as grant-in-aid for construction of laboratories in the state.
